5. AREX Guide: Only Follow the Orange!
The AREX: Seoul's Airport Rail Link Explained
The Airport Railroad Express (AREX) is the train line connecting Incheon International Airport to downtown Seoul. It is fast, reliable, air-conditioned, and runs from 5:20 AM to midnight. For most solo travelers and couples without excessive luggage, the AREX is the best way into Seoul.
The critical thing to understand is that there are two completely different trains running on the same AREX line, and choosing the wrong one adds 20–30 minutes to your journey.
The Two AREX Trains: Orange vs. Blue
Orange Train: AREX Express (직통열차)
- Route: Incheon T1 → Incheon T2 → Seoul Station (NON-STOP)
- Travel time: 43 minutes from T1, 51 minutes from T2
- Price: ₩11,000 one way ($8 USD) — seats must be reserved
- Frequency: Every 30–40 minutes
- Features: Dedicated luggage racks at every seat, USB charging ports, 100% reserved seating
Blue Train: AREX All-Stop (일반열차)
- Route: Incheon T1 → 8 intermediate stations → Seoul Station
- Travel time: 56–66 minutes from T1
- Price: ₩4,550 ($3.40 USD) — pay with T-money card, no reservation needed
- Frequency: Every 6–12 minutes
- Features: Standing room available, connects to Seoul Metro at Gimpo Airport, Digital Media City, and Hongdae stations
Which Train Should You Take?
The decision comes down to your destination and budget:
- Going to Seoul Station, Myeongdong, or areas well-served by Seoul Station: Take the Orange Express. The 20-minute time saving justifies the ₩6,500 price difference for most travelers.
- Going to Hongdae (Hapjeong area): The Blue All-Stop actually serves Hongdae Station directly and is cheaper. Take the blue train and exit at Digital Media City or Hongdae-Ipgu station.
- Budget travelers with flexibility: The Blue train is perfectly comfortable and saves money. The time difference is not dramatic.
- Large groups with heavy luggage: The Orange Express's dedicated luggage racks make it more comfortable. Book in advance on the AREX website or at the ticket machines.
How to Find the AREX at Incheon T1
- Exit the baggage claim hall and enter the public arrivals area (Floor 1).
- Follow the signs for "AREX" or "Airport Railroad" — these are on the floor and ceiling in blue and orange colors.
- Take the escalator or elevator down to the B1 floor (basement level 1).
- The ticket machines are at the platform entrance. Both trains depart from the same station — check the departure boards for the correct platform.
Limousine Bus Alternative
If you are not going to Seoul Station or Hongdae, the Airport Limousine Bus may be more convenient. These coaches serve specific areas of Seoul and run directly to bus stops near major hotel districts. Key routes:
- Route 6001: Seoul Station, Myeongdong
- Route 6002: Gangnam, Yangjae
- Route 6015: Mapo, Yeouido
- Route 6103: Itaewon, Yongsan
Buses depart from Floors 1 and B1. Ticket machines are near the bus stops. Keep your luggage ticket ("Claim Tag") safe — the bus driver may check it when loading bags into the luggage compartment.
T-Money Card: Your Transport Pass
For the Blue All-Stop AREX and all Seoul subway and bus travel, you need a T-Money card (or a card with T-Money function). You can buy these at convenience stores in the arrivals hall for ₩4,000 ($3 USD) and top them up with cash or card. T-Money cards save approximately 10–15% on fares compared to single-ride tickets.

Community Discussion
This guide was super helpful! I was worried about the curfew at Gimhae, but now I know what to expect.
Does the K-ETA application really only take ₩10,000? I saw sites charging $50.
Yes, Alice! The official fee is exactly ₩10,000. Any site charging more is a third-party service or a potential scam. Always use the official link.
