4. The Taxi Luggage Trap: Group Size Matters
The Luggage Problem That Surprises Every Group
You have just landed at Incheon after a long flight, your group has four people, and everyone has a 28-inch suitcase. You head to the taxi stand, relieved to finally be on the ground. Then the driver opens the trunk, looks at your bags, and shakes his head. A standard Korean Sonata or Avante sedan taxi has a trunk that physically cannot fit more than two large suitcases. Your group is stuck.
This scenario plays out hundreds of times a day at Incheon. It is not the driver's fault — the cars are simply too small. Knowing your options in advance saves significant stress.
Standard Taxis: What Fits and What Does Not
The typical Korean taxi is a mid-size sedan (Hyundai Sonata or Kia K5). The trunk can comfortably fit:
- 2 standard 28-inch suitcases (tight)
- Or 1 large case + 2 carry-on bags
- Or 3 small cabin bags
It cannot fit: 3 or 4 large suitcases. Period.
Your Solutions for Groups with Large Luggage
1. Jumbo Taxi (Van Taxi) — Best Option
At Incheon Airport, there are dedicated "Jumbo Taxi" stands where you can find larger vans (Kia Carnival or similar). These vans can accommodate 4–6 passengers with full luggage. The price is approximately 1.5–2x a regular taxi to the same destination, which is often still cheaper than two standard taxis.
To find Jumbo Taxis at Incheon T1: Exit the arrivals hall through doors 4–7, look for the Jumbo Taxi sign on the right side of the taxi lane (usually marked with an orange or yellow "점보택시" sign).
2. Private Van Transfer — Most Comfortable
Pre-book a private van transfer through Klook, KKday, or similar platforms. A van transfer from Incheon to central Seoul typically costs ₩100,000–₩150,000 ($75–$110 USD) for up to 4 people with luggage. The driver will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with a name sign. For families with children and multiple bags, this is the stress-free choice.
3. Two Standard Taxis
The least ideal option but works in a pinch. One bag per taxi, split the group. The downside is coordination and slightly higher combined cost than a single van.
4. AREX + Luggage Delivery Service
An increasingly popular option: send your large suitcases via T-Luggage or Zimcarry (see Tip #19) and take the AREX train to your hotel with just a small personal bag. The luggage arrives at your hotel by evening. This works especially well if you are staying near a major AREX station (Seoul Station, Hongdae, Suseo).
Taxi Pricing: What to Expect (2026)
Standard taxi fares from Incheon T1 to central Seoul:
- Regular taxi to Hongdae area: ₩60,000–₩70,000 ($45–$52 USD)
- Regular taxi to Myeongdong/Jung-gu: ₩75,000–₩90,000 ($56–$67 USD)
- Regular taxi to Gangnam: ₩80,000–₩100,000 ($60–$75 USD)
- Night surcharge (midnight–4 AM): Add 40% to the above estimates
Using KakaoT for Airport Taxis
KakaoT (Korea's dominant taxi app) allows you to book a taxi or van from the airport in advance. In the app, select "Large Taxi" or "Van" to ensure you get an appropriate vehicle. You can also see estimated prices before booking, which helps with budgeting. International credit cards generally work on KakaoT — select "Pay to Driver" at checkout if your card is declined in the app.

This guide was super helpful! I was worried about the curfew at Gimhae, but now I know what to expect.
Does the K-ETA application really only take ₩10,000? I saw sites charging $50.
Yes, Alice! The official fee is exactly ₩10,000. Any site charging more is a third-party service or a potential scam. Always use the official link.
